I have always been intrigued by the history of the Koh-i-noor diamond.  It is perceived to be one of the most magnificent jewels in the world, and it is known as the mountain of light.  It’s historical origins can be linked to both Indian and Persian rulers – and due to their fight for it, it ended up in the hands of the British.  Queen Victoria was named Empress of India, and the Koh-i-noor diamonds became part of the crown jewels.  To this day, the diamond remains in the Tower of London.   It is said to be unlucky for any man who wears or owns it (as history can show us!) and to bring fortune to any woman who owns it.  I’d love to learn more about its historical basis and significane… it’s so interesting.

I really enjoy reading Marie Claire — it’s one of the only magazines (directed at young women) that i find to be socially conscious and who bring global topics to its readers (which i think is so important).  In its December version, the fashion spread called Mecca Stars was absolutely breathtaking.  Maybe it was because all the models were clad in their traditional dress.  Take a look…

so delicate… November 18, 2006

I *love* stationary.  I especially love giving and receiving it and those who know me, know that i put special thought into picking out stationary for people and occassions.  One of my favourite brands is Mudlark — the designs are so delicate and the prices are just right.  And not only do you get beautiful stationary… but it comes in a keepsake box that you can use later for something else.  Love it!  Also, each box comes with a special quote, and the one i have picked out says: “A bit of fragrance clings to the hand that gives flowers.” — Chinese proverb

Not just a book November 18, 2006

There is nothing more satisfying to me than a good book.  I have always loved reading, probably because i’ve had my share of wonderful English and Literature teachers and professors over the years.  My sister is a teacher, and growing up she was very good about encouraging our creativity and specifically helping to make reading fun.

Recently, i read two very good novels which i have been recommending to my family and friends.  The first was suggested to me by a close friend of mine and is called, The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar.  I found this novel to be written so incredibly well and felt the writing added something very special to the story being told.  The title gives an insight into what the story will be about — the separation between class and gender in modern day Bombay and its implications on relationships.  Maybe we can never get away from a society defined by so many levels of power?

Another book that has stuck with me was, Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits, by Laila Lalami.  The book describes the experience of Moroccon immigrants through their perspective.  Each story is delicate in its own way, but gives us a sense of the larger immigrant experience across the globe.  Laila Lalami also has a wonderful blog that is worth taking a look at: MoorishGirl.

The Maharani’s Box is all about the musings of a quest.  We all have stories to tell, and this is a view into mine.  Our stories are a path of our history — made up of people, places, and things.  Each of these things has defined me in its own way.  And i pay tribute to those things that affect me each and every day.  At times it may be something small and unconsequential to others, but often times it will be something meaningful.  But these are the things that make me stop and think for long enough to appreciate the quest.
